“GML in JPEG 2000 for Geographic Imagery (GMLJP2)”

Martin Kyle-GALDOS SYSTEMS INC and Sean Forde-LIZARDTECH

Over the past year, the Open Geospatial Consortium has been working on a specification entitled: “GML in JPEG 2000 for Geographic Imagery (GMLJP2).” This specification is the marriage of two stable and mature international standards that define standards for geographic information encoding and wavelet compressed imagery; it has the potential to impact everyone working with geospatial data. This paper will highlight the features of GMLJP2, how those features benefit the geomatics specialist and what use cases acted as the impetus behind its development. We will also demonstrate some of those use cases with a working implementation of a GMLJP2 codec.
